FRANCE – Bilal Hassani declared himself a “Roi” in Eurovision 2019. And now he’s shown he’s a dancefloor king. Bilal finished second in the main final of Danse avec les stars 2021.
Danse avec les stars is the French counterpart of Strictly Come Dancing. Celebrities from France study ballroom, Latin, and other dance forms, and then perform weekly for judges and spectators at home.
Bilal was a prominent competitor early on in the tournament. With his professional partner Jordan Mouillerac, the French vocalist routinely topped the scoreboard.
Their journey to the final took eleven weeks of a tough battle. In the first round, each of the remaining three couples danced freestyle. Bilal and Jordan scored 39 out of 40 points, advancing them to the final two.
It came down to the public vote in the end. Bilal danced the waltz before ending the season with a modern tune.
Ultimately, the people voted 56% to 44% against Bilal. This is still a tremendous feat and a tribute to his achievements during the season.
Tayc and Fauve Hautot, a Cameroonian-French duo, won.
It’s a little more difficult than other franchises since the scoring standards vary and there are different rounds each week. A “-” next to a portion denotes Bilal’s dancing score exempted him from that round. The “Face-à-face” is similar to the “dance-off” in other shows.
Dita von Teese, who sang for Germany in Eurovision 2009, also appears on Danse avec les stars 2021. The burlesque dancer defeated Bilal Hassani in a week four combat. Dita was eliminated in week nine, finishing fifth.
Not just Bilal has made it to the final of Danse avec les stars. Loc Nottet, from Belgium, won the tournament later that year.
