STOCKHOLM, SWEDEN – We all wonder what will happen if Australia wins the 2015 Eurovision Song Contest. Based on what EBU has already said, the 2016 edition will anyway take place in European soil and most Eurofans assume that it will be undertaken by the runner up country at least.
Weirdly SVT’s Christer Björkman seems to know more on the issue and since he was a member of the Reference Group when Australia admitted in the 2015 Eurovision Song Contest made the following statement during the Inför Eurovision show on SVT:
“Australia from the onset had to cooperate with a European broadcaster who could guarantee that they could host it, in case Australia would win the contest,” Björkman stated. “That was part of the deal. It then soon became clear that NDR was that broadcaster. So if Australia wins, SBS and NDR organize it together, but the contest takes place in Germany.”
On the other hand EBU’s Event Supervisor Sietse Bakker said that there is no decision made yet, looking at several options and although confirming that Germany is one option he declined to further comment the story as we still need to find out whether Australia will actually win.
No matter what an Australian victory in Eurovision 2015 will create a fuzz of discussions about the hosting of the next Eurovision Song Contest edition!
