DID THEY MAKE IT?
Surprisingly, the three-minute limit was inspired by an Italian Eurovision entry. Nunzio Gallo’s 1957 song “Corde della mia chitarra” lasted a remarkable five minutes and nine seconds. Protests from the crowd resulted in a new rule stating that each song could not last more than three minutes.
The original tune is three minutes and twenty seconds long, which surpasses the three-minute limit permitted by Eurovision’s official regulations.
The Eurovision version starts with Mahmood singing a cappella โ the original guitar prelude was omitted.
Shortening a song is never a simple undertaking, particularly when a poor or negligent cut may drastically alter the atmosphere and flow of the original composition. And Italy is all too aware of it, as the three-minute limit turned Francesco Gabbani’s entry “Occidentali’s Karma” upside down in 2017.
The song’s duration was reduced by around 25 seconds, from three minutes and twenty seconds to two minutes and 55 seconds.
The last chorus was reduced, and the music came to a halt while the two singers sang the final phrase.
The general tone of the three-minute version is more appropriate for a live performance, emphasising the voices of Mahmood and Blanco rather than the musical backdrop.
and by the way, they are still favourites in the booking odds!
