ARMENIA – Armenia’s Eurovision 2016 representative Iveta Mukuchyan waved a flag of the Nagorno Karabakh Republic (NKR) during the voting recap of Eurovision 2016 First Semi Final where she qualified for the final along with representatives of nine other nations, including Azerbaijan.
The 29-year-old Germany-based Armenian singer said at the Semi Final winners’ press conference afterwards that since she represented Armenia, her heart, thoughts and feelings were with her nations. “Even though 150 million people are watching, my thoughts are with my Motherland,” Mukuchyan declared.
Armenians and Azerbaijanis, who are locked in a bitter conflict over Karabakh, saw another flare-up of violence in the region in early April. Scores of soldiers were killed on both sides in what proved to be the heaviest fighting since the 1994 truce. At the press conference the Armenian singer explained that she “just wants peace on the borders.”
Azerbaijan’s representative at the competition, Samra, and members of the Azerbaijani delegation reportedly avoided commenting on Mukuchyan’s action, saying that “Eurovision is a song contest, and it’s all about music.”
THE REFERENCE GROUP DECISION DECISION
Today and upon question of http://www.oikotimes.com due to the fact the EBU declared already from the end of the First Semi Final that there will be a discussion for a penalty in the June Reference Group, announced moments ago the decision for the Armenian penalty: “Armenia will face a fine of an undisclosed amount for Iveta waving a flag not in accordance of the rules set out by Eurovison and the EBU”.
