🇺🇸 Cher covers ABBA’s “Chiquitita” for first-ever Spanish language single

USA – Cher is supporting the United Nations Children’s Fund (UNICEF) with her first-ever Spanish-language single, a cover of ABBA’s “Chiquitita.” She has simultaneously released an English-language version as well.

In the new cover, she huskily sings the song’s lyrics of encouragement for a forlorn friend over its winding acoustic guitar melody. A video for the song will debut during UNICEF’s COVID-19 Virtual Special on Saturday.

Cher covered the English-language version of “Chiquitita” for her 2018 ABBA tribute album Dancing Queen. She began rehearsing the Spanish-language version late last year. “When everything changed in the world I wanted to help,” she said in a statement.

“This seemed like the right time to complete it. I’ve long admired UNICEF, especially their work educating young women. The actress Audrey Hepburn was a hero of mine and I was so proud when she became their first Goodwill Ambassador in 1988. Now, more than ever, it’s critical that we prioritize every child around the world as if they were our own.”

Proceeds from Cher’s cover of the ABBA classic will be donated to UNICEF, much like ABBA’s original version. The Swedish quartet performed the song at a UNICEF event in 1979 and donated half of their royalties to the fund until 2014 when all members of the band agreed to donate 100 per cent of royalties to UNICEF. Cher has also pledged $1 million through her just-formed CherCares Pandemic Resource and Response Initiative, which will distribute the money to various charities that will support the “chronically neglected and forgotten” who are suffering the most from the pandemic.

Cher has had an ABBA-filled few years, beginning with her cameo in the 2018 film Mamma Mia! Here We Go Again where she sang “Fernando” and “Super Trouper.” She released Dancing Queen that fall and embarked on the worldwide Here We Go Again tour in support of the LP, which was her first worldwide tour since 2002’s Living Proof: The Farewell Tour. Her spring tour dates have been tentatively postponed until this fall due to the pandemic.

SWEDEN 🇸🇪 SVT revealed the 2021 Melodifestivalen stage. This year no audience offers more options says the designer, Viktor Brattström. Somehow the stage reminds us an alternative version of the 2021 Eurovision stage, what do you think?

PORTUGAL 🇵🇹 RTP presented the 20 songs which will compete in the Portuguese national selection Festival da Canção, the annual music festival of the country through which the Eurovision entry and artist is selected. The format of the competition will consist of three shows: two semi-finals on 20 and 27 February 2021 and the final on 6 March 2021. In the final, the winner will be determined by the votes from regional jury panels and public voting. For the fifth consecutive year, RTP abolished the language restrictions, so that artists may submit songs in any language(s), even without Portuguese. On 4 December 2020, RTP revealed the names of the twenty participating composers: eighteen invited by RTP and two selected from 693 submissions received during an open call for songs. It was also announced that Jorge Gabriel and José Carlos Malato will host the first semi-final on February 20th, with Tania Ribas De Oliveira and Sónia Araújo hosting the second semi-final on February 27th.
CZECH REPUBLIC 🇨🇿 In a recent interview LAKE MALAWI's frontman, Albert Černý said that he didn't really want to participate in Polish selection last year. He did it more for PR rather than to get the ticket to Eurovision. After all he did a great job in 2019 for him and his country. He said that he was actually praying not to win the national final. The idea for participation came from his Polish manager who told him not to worry as he will probably not win because he's not 100% Polish.
SWEDEN 🇸🇪 Speaking to SVT radio, Melodifestivalen’s producer Karin Gunnarsson revealed the measures taken for this year's show. First, if a participant performed in rehearsals and then gets ill, his back up video performance will be aired instead. Second, the artists will rehearse and work in the venue in their own bubble avoiding contact with other artists and further infections. Universal Music contact person, Frida Boström, said that the lack of audience will give the artists more room to create their stage presentation and focus on it. All six shows will take place at the Stockholm Annexet without an audience.
