SANREMO, ITALY – It was clearly stated after the final of Sanremo Festival 2016 that the winners, Stadio, were not interested to accept the offer to represent the country in the Eurovision Song Contest as all websites reported including the official website of EBU, eurovision.tv
Today though things seem to have changed. RAI holds a press conference saying that the Sanremo Festival winners have not yet officially ruled out the possibility to represent Italy in Stockholm. This doesn;t mean necessarily they will be the performers.
Stadio’s lead singer Gaetano Curreri, who is also a well known songwriter in Italy, stated that “We still have to decide. Maybe we write a piece with runner-up Francesca Michielin and we go there offering our duet.”
In any case there is no final decision and RAI gives them a bit more time to give their final decision on the issue. In today’s press conference, RAI has today announced that they will wait for Stadio’s decision. “We still want Stadio to go to Eurovision, and have not offered the right to represent Italy to any other artist just yet.”
The decision by Stadio to be announced shortly this afternoon during an interview on Rai Uno ”L’Arena” with Massimo Giletti.
