UNITED KINGDOM – Last Monday, the BBC announced a collaboration with TaP Music, the management firm behind Dua Lipa and Lana Del Rey, to choose the UK’s representative for the 2022 Eurovision Song Contest. However, Chelcee Grimes is being considered to either represent the UK in Turin or create the song sent there.
Chelcee Grimes is a singer, songwriter, footballer, and TV personality. The 29-year-old is already a Eurovision veteran, having co-commented on the BBC’s Eurovision semi-finals earlier this year with Scott Mills.
A source told METRO.CO.UK
“Chelcee is not just a talented artist in her own right, sheโs also an extremely gifted songwriter, so it makes complete sense that bosses would want her to help with the UKโs Eurovision entry. Chelcee has already written songs for the likes of Dua Lipa, Kylie Minogue and The Saturdays and is really in demand right now, but if her schedule allowed and they can make it work, it would be a huge statement of intent for the UKโs entry to get her onboard. The other massive plus for Chelcee is that she was part of the presenting team for Eurovision this year and knows the format perfectly. Itโs early days but Chelcee could be the dream signing to shake things up.”
Her own songs include Girls, Time To Talk, and Tryna Not Fall In Love. Besides her current club Merseyrail Ladies FC, she has worked with BBC Sport and Sky Sports. She recently played for the victorious Rest of the World Team in Soccer Aid.
Ben Mawson of TaP Music said of the new Eurovision strategy
“Weโre really excited to be teaming up with the BBC for this event and will use Eurovision to authentically reflect and celebrate the rich, diverse and world-class musical talent the UK is globally renowned for.”
The agreement ends the BBC’s two-year association with BMG. With the help of BMG, the broadcaster chose โa song with global appeal and a performer who epitomizes the Eurovision Song Contest’ for 2019.
This relationship ended Eurovision: You Decide when the people choose the UK’s representative. Michael Rice’s song Bigger Than Us, which finished last at the song contest in Israel in 2019, was the last to be chosen that way. The epidemic forced the cancellation of the 2020 Eurovision Song Contest, thus James Newman was invited back for a second year. Unfortunately, his 2021 entry, the lively song Embers, won zero points from the judges and public in May in The Netherlands.
Since 2009, when Jade Ewen finished fifth with It’s My Time, the UK hasn’t had a top 10 artist, since.
