The Croatian national broadcaster, HRT, has called on artists to submit their songs for the 2013 Eurovision Song Contest. However, only traditional klapa style songs can be submitted. Klapa is a traditional Croatian acapella song sung by several male vocalists. Klapas are popular in the Dalmatia region of Croatia with most songs based around the sea and Mediterranean way of life.
HRT has been criticised by the public in the past for not sending more traditional songs to Eurovision. HRT has given a thirty day deadline for interested artist to send in their klapa songs. Rules for those wishing to take part can be found on the HRT website, in Croatian only.
Croatia is hoping to overturn its recent bad run of results. Despite sending the regionally popular Nina Badrić last year, she failed to make it to the final of Eurovision. The last time the country made it to the final was in Belgrade in 2009 with Igor Cukrov.
