Olivier Rocher from France
Let’s be honest here. When CyBC said they would go internal this year, I thought “Oh My!”. When Minus One were announced as the Cypriot entrants, I couldn’t help but say “Rock for Aphrodite island? Really???”. Eventually, “Alter Ego” was premiered with a high quality music video and I was more that positively surprised! Compared to the 2 other rock entries this year (Georgia and Montenegro), Cyprus is way over the top! What a track! From the very first note it’s powerful, catchy and modern, without being one of those messy rock acts that we are used to hear. The singer (a French man by the way) has a great voice that suits “Alter Ego” perfectly. For sure, the Cyprus entry will stand out, and in a good way. Once again, a live performance would be great to see how good this entry is. But for me Minus One have to qualify!
Luka Popovic from Serbia
This is a good pop-rock song and by far the best when compared to other entries in the same genre. With so many ballads around, I think the song should generally do well, at least in the semi final, especially if producers give it a good running order. For me the last part of the song is the best, when the beat slows down and the lyrics become more audible. It is a catchy entry.
Jaime Solloso from Spain
This is a very potent number, it starts off with the lyrics and the “you know” line which by itself is fairly annoying but the song does have a great melody and impacts straight from the beginning. Minus One do tell a story with the song and use the instrumental sounds to add gravitas where needed. Although it’s a sort of pop-rock number, it is miles away from Lordi, which is no bad thing. We have evolved from that time and this son gis very much the voice of now. Again, staging is key. Depending how this is staged it could do very well. The fear is that if the acoustics are not right, it may sound flat. It’s certainly a Top 3 contender, if performed correctly on the night.
