CYPRRUS – During the Philipp Kirkorov birthday party on April 30th, Eleni Foureira met with her co-patriot representative, Eugent Bushpepa from Albania. In the joint photo they posted on Instagram they form with their hands the symbol of the eagle, which is depicted on the Albanian flag. Unfortunately that symbol is frustrating the Greeks for years as it is considered a symbol of the Albanian nationalism for the creation of the Great Albania which includes parts of Greece (among others). For the Albanians is a gesture of feeling nostalgic for their homeland.
In a weird period where the issues off relations with Turkey and FYR Macedonia are open and hot in Greece, Greek media attacked Eleni Foureira for this hand gesture, saying that its was a huge mistake to insult the Greeks, a nation which welcomed and showed their love to Eleni. After all it still remains an issue, the fact that Eleni Foureira was kidding her descent for years always saying to her interviews she is descending from Mexico.
Eleni Foureira with an Insta story, responded: “Music unites and doesn’t separate the nations and I am here for that reason and I have nothing to do with all this issue of nationalism, some try to credit me. I love Greece and no one and nothing can change that. Let’s go and represent Cyprus now, with the best possible way”.
During our interview yesterday with Albanian representative, Eugent Bushpepa we raised the issue off camera. Eugent Kindly responded that this hand gesture is something Albanians do out of happiness and doesn’t wish to talk about further and on camera. Our French editor interviewing the Albanian representative did the same hand gesture in our Instagram boomerang and we hope that this doesn’t mean that he believe in the idea of Great Albania (although we doubt Olivier even knows what that “Great Albania” even means).
