CYPRUS – It is widely spread that Cyprus is cancelling the national selection process and will instead select internally a singer for Lisbon’s Eurovision Song Contest. There are rumours about X-Factor Greece and Bulgaria winners to be in the minds of the broadcaster for potential collaboration.
The thing that will not change is the composer. Alex Papaconstantinou will be the composer of the song. It is unknown why and if the procedure will be cancelled. Everyone could notice that on RIK’s TV schedule the show which was suppose to start on January 5th is not anywhere mentioned.
Speaking to a CyBC source, there was a rather enigmatic answer saying that “everything is still ongoing but Alex Papaconstantinou will be the composer no matter what”.
We would like you to read this information in caution, though!
Cyprus has participated in the Eurovision Song Contest 34 times since making its debut in 1981. Cyprus’ first entry was the group Island, who finished sixth. The country’s best result in the contest is three fifth-place finishes; for Anna Vissi in 1982, Hara & Andreas Constantinou in 1997 and Lisa Andreas in 2004.
Since 2006, Cyprus failed to qualify from the semi-final round for six out of eight years (2006–2013), before withdrawing from the 2014 contest. On 14 July 2014, CyBC officially confirmed Cyprus’ return to the contest, with the country reaching the final in 2015, 2016 and 2017.
