RUSSIA – The most prestigious music festival takes place these days in Sochi, Russia: The New Wave Festival which marks it’s 16h edition.
For the first 14 years New Wave used to be held in the Latvian coastal city of Jūrmala, but since 2015 it has moved to Sochi, the Russian Federation (other potential locations included Baku, Kaliningrad, Kazan and Crimea). According to organizer Igor Krutoy, the main reason for relocating was performing Russian singers Valeriya, Iosif Kobzon and Oleg Gazmanov being denied entry into Latvia for the 2014 contest by Minister of Foreign Affairs Edgars Rinkēvičs because of their voiced support for Russia’s annexation of Crimea.

Hai Moldova! https://youtu.be/fTIr33QyAyE
The importance of the festival is huge for Eastern Europe, something proven by the Instagram of many officials every year, such as the Moldovan President last night who congratulated his country’s participants, The DoReDos band for an amazing performance and for achieving maximum points by the juries on the first night. Indeed the Moldovan participants impressed the jury members and we got a short footage of their performance directly from the arena, Sochi Olympic Park. It will be no surprise to see them in Lisbon!
Reporting from Sochi, our colleagues impressed tonight, during the Jury Evening the judges were invited on stage to perform; and guess who debuted for the very first time in his life: multi participant composer in Eurovision, Dimitris Kontopoulos, exclusive video of which you can see in this post. The man who brought us Ani Lorak, Sergey Lazarev, Dima Bilan, Dmitry Koldun in Eurovision.
The festival is the place for many Eurovision participants to kick off their career. Sergey Lazarev, part of band Smash in 2002 won the festival while Dima Bilan was 4th that year. Natalia Gordienko winner of the festival in 2007 represented Moldova the year before in Athens Eurovision edition. Before she holds the trophy in Eurovision 2016, Jamala won the New Wave Festival in 2009 and in 2016 one of the two winners of the festival was the first ever Junior Eurovision Song Contest 2003 winner Dino Jelusic from Croatia.
During the three night event, the jury votes solely and the winner this year will be announced on Wednesday evening.
