THE NETHERLANDS – Last year, film Duncan Laurence declined an offer to play a role like herself in the Netflix movie “Eurovision Song Contest: The Story of Fire Saga“. “He was approached but it did not fit in his agenda,” says his manager.
Since the parody film premiered on Netflix on Friday, many viewers have wondered why Duncan does not come by, especially considering several other Eurovision candidates from last year did score a role. Among them was also Eurovision commentator Cornald Maas. “I was surprised,” he said earlier this week. “Certainly because Duncan was number 1 with the bookmakers in advance and was a favourite for the overall victory.”
John Lundvik (Sweden), Bilal Hassani (France) and Anna Odobescu (Moldova) emerge from last year’s Eurovision Song Contest. Former candidates Elina Nechayeva (Estonia, 2018) and Jessy Matador (France, 2010) are also present. Those who pay close attention will also see former winners Netta (2018), Salvador Sobral (2017), Jamala (2016), Conchita Wurst (2014), Loreen (2012) and Alexander Rybak (2009) passing by.
Fire Saga protagonists Will Ferrell and Rachel McAdams took a look behind the scenes of the song festival in Tel Aviv last year. However, the recordings only took place after the event. The 2019 podium was rebuilt for this in London.
“The Story of Fire Saga” is about two Icelandic musicians, played by Ferrell and McAdams. The two will have the opportunity to represent their country at the Eurovision song contest, and they are committed to that with full dedication. Demi Lovato, Pierce Brosnan and Dan Stevens, among others, also play roles in the parody film.
