EBU.CH REPORTS / SWITZERLAND – France Télévisions Chief Executive Officer Delphine Ernotte Cunci has been elected as the new President of the European Broadcasting Union (EBU). Czech Television’s Director General Petr Dvořák will serve as Vice-President.

They were both elected to the roles by an absolute majority at the EBU’s first virtual General Assembly held online today. They will take up the new roles from 1 January 2021 for a two-year period.

The President and Vice-President are responsible for leading the EBU’s Executive Board and help champion the value and importance of public service media across Europe.

Delphine Ernotte Cunci was appointed CEO of France Télévisions in 2015 and has just been re-elected for a second-term. Prior to joining France Télévisions, she spent 26 years at Orange S.A. (previously known as France Télécom), latterly working as CEO of Orange France from 2011-2015. She is currently serving as Vice-President of the EBU and will replace ex-BBC Director General Tony Hall as President.

She said: “I am very honoured by the trust and confidence that Members have bestowed upon me. The health crisis has underlined the major democratic role played by public service media in accessing free and trusted information. The diversity of our countries and our cultures is a major strength in confronting global media platforms and I will, of course, rely on it. I will follow in the footsteps of my predecessor Tony Hall, to whom I pay tribute, so that our alliance can continue to uphold Europe’s cultural and technological sovereignty. Lastly, I am both proud and happy for all France Télévisions staff, with whom I share the honour of becoming the EBU’s first female president.”

Petr Dvořák has been Director General of Czech Television since 2011. Prior to joining, he served as Senior Vice President for Central European Media Enterprises and also worked as Director General of TV Nova – the most successful commercial television group in the Czech Republic.

He said: “Without any doubt, these are difficult times. However, public service media are good at doing difficult things. It is part of our DNA and we have proven, recently as well as during our long history, that we excel at fulfilling different public needs no matter what. Despite the pandemic, the economic changes, political pressures, the transformation of viewing habits, technological development and transnational competitors, we keep on working and we are, after all, the most trusted media in Europe. I am very happy to join the EBU as Vice-President and I am very keen on helping everyone find ways to work together and support each other.”

EUROVISION 2021 🇳🇱 10 stand-in singers and 14 dancers will conduct the mock rehearsals before the opening of the Eurovision week in Rotterdam, from the art colleges of Albeda and Codarts. Something from which the City Council member, Said Kasmi is extremely proud.
PORTUGAL 🇵🇹 RTP presented the 20 songs which will compete in the Portuguese national selection Festival da Canção, the annual music festival of the country through which the Eurovision entry and artist is selected. The format of the competition will consist of three shows: two semi-finals on 20 and 27 February 2021 and the final on 6 March 2021. In the final, the winner will be determined by the votes from regional jury panels and public voting. For the fifth consecutive year, RTP abolished the language restrictions, so that artists may submit songs in any language(s), even without Portuguese. On 4 December 2020, RTP revealed the names of the twenty participating composers: eighteen invited by RTP and two selected from 693 submissions received during an open call for songs. It was also announced that Jorge Gabriel and José Carlos Malato will host the first semi-final on February 20th, with Tania Ribas De Oliveira and Sónia Araújo hosting the second semi-final on February 27th.
CZECH REPUBLIC 🇨🇿 In a recent interview LAKE MALAWI's frontman, Albert Černý said that he didn't really want to participate in Polish selection last year. He did it more for PR rather than to get the ticket to Eurovision. After all he did a great job in 2019 for him and his country. He said that he was actually praying not to win the national final. The idea for participation came from his Polish manager who told him not to worry as he will probably not win because he's not 100% Polish.
SWEDEN 🇸🇪 Speaking to SVT radio, Melodifestivalen’s producer Karin Gunnarsson revealed the measures taken for this year's show. First, if a participant performed in rehearsals and then gets ill, his back up video performance will be aired instead. Second, the artists will rehearse and work in the venue in their own bubble avoiding contact with other artists and further infections. Universal Music contact person, Frida Boström, said that the lack of audience will give the artists more room to create their stage presentation and focus on it. All six shows will take place at the Stockholm Annexet without an audience.
NORTH MACEDONIA 🇲🇰 Vasil Garvanliev has been re-affirmed as the country's 2021 representative for Roettrdam's Eurovision Song Contest edition. The song will be eventually selected internally. It is the 23rd artist confirmed for Eurovision 2021.
