UKRAINE – Today the sixth city proposing to host the Eurovision Song Contest 2017 next May announced: it’s the city of Kherson, the administration of which asked NTU to elaborate the requirements for the arena and the press centre.
“For our border town it would be a great stimulus for the development, investment, and politically it is actual as well. We have already proved that Kherson – it is Ukraine. Now we have a chance to prove that Kherson -. this is Europe” – said Mayor of Kherson Vladimir Mikolaenko.
Though the city only hall, CCH “Yubileyny”, can host 1,600 spectators. Krystal arena in the city can also hold 20 thousand spectators but needs reconstruction.
Regional administration estimate the cost of the event to 300 million Hryvnia which will be allocated by the city, almost 50 million Hryvnia by regional treasury and remaining costs from the state and sponsors.
“Kherson can host European event – we have no doubt about it, and with this attitude we enter the race. We’re already preparing videos of Kherson region, which we will sent to all the participating countries of Eurovision. We had a conversation with all the parties involved in the selection process. We have chances and we will fight till the end”, said Gordeev.
The airport also needs reconstruction which is planned for early 2017 the latest to deliver domestic flights from Kyiv while accommodation is a problem which has to be done in collaboration with the city of Nikolaev which is 60 km away from Kherson.
The final decision for the Eurovision Song Contest 2017 hosting city will be made on August 1st and it’s unlikely to see more than 6 cities in the bidding race, while we do expect withdrawals.
