However pop superstar Madonna sprang a surprise during her guest performance of two songs – her iconic 1989 hit “Like A Prayer” and a new number, “Future,” sung alongside the American rapper Quavo. At the close of the second number, two backing dancers briefly appeared on stage wearing the Israeli and Palestinian flags on the back of their costumes.

Members of the Hatari group held up Palestinian flags with ‘Palestine’ written on them as the cameras were fixed on them during the announcement of their public votes at the final on Saturday night. The protest generated boos and cheers from the crowd at the Tel Aviv event, and support online.

Duncan Laurence, 25, was the bookies’ favourite heading into the final. His track “Arcade” was awarded 492 points from the 41 countries participating. The last time the Netherlands won the contest was in Stockholm in 1975 with “Ding-a-Dong!
