THE NETHERLANDS – It may have been more than half a century ago, but Roland de Groot can still picture everything perfectly.
At the time, De Groot was a stage designer and devised the setting for the 1970 edition, a design that was later described by colleagues as ‘revolutionary’.
“At the time, seven silver balls were hanging above the stage, placed in a different place for each song,” says De Groot.
“We only had 40 seconds between shows to hang everything right.”
His decor was an international success.
That is why he was allowed to design it three more times after 1970: in 1976, 1980 and 1984, also all with moving set pieces.
Now that the song festival is back in the Netherlands after years, the now 81-year-old De Groot received an invitation to come and have a look in Ahoy, where the first rehearsals are already in full swing.
