EUROVISION.TV REPORTS / THE NETHERLANDS – After Duncan Laurence’s victory in Tel Aviv in 2019, the Netherlands was ready to organize the Eurovision Song Contest after 40 long years. But, as you know, that didn’t exactly go as planned. Due to the impact of the coronavirus, the 2020 Contest was cancelled. Thankfully, the Eurovision Song Contest will definitely return in 2021 and on 22 May a new winner will be crowned!

In order to be able to make that promise, the EBU and Dutch Host Broadcasters NPO, NOS and AVROTROS have been working on 4 basic scenarios for hosting the competition.

Scenario A: A normal Eurovision Song Contest
In this situation, the Eurovision Song Contest will be organized as normal from Rotterdam’s Ahoy Arena with 9 shows (including the dress rehearsals) in a packed venue, with delegations and artists from all the participating broadcasters and numerous activities in and around Rotterdam.

The feasibility of this scenario largely depends on the roll-out of a possible vaccine for COVID-19 or the availability of reliable testing.

Scenario B: Socially distant Eurovision Song Contest – at 1.5 meters
Everyone present at the Eurovision Song Contest in Rotterdam would need to practice social distancing and remain 1.5 meters from each other at all times.

Again, there would be 9 shows, with an audience in the arena, but with limited capacity to allow for social distancing.

Teams from each participating broadcaster would travel to Rotterdam, but with limits on the number of people in each delegation and on the number of the press who could attend. Activities in and around Rotterdam would be adapted accordingly.

Because there would be less space for the audience in this scenario, a new seating layout would have to be made. If that happens, a fair draw will be held to decide who can still attend each show. There will be more information about this in the first months of 2021. Anyone who is unsuccessful in the draw will, of course, be refunded the full purchase amount for their tickets.

Scenario C: A Eurovision Song Contest with travel restrictions
A Eurovision Song Contest, probably also socially distanced, from Rotterdam’s Ahoy Arena as in scenario B, with 9 shows and a limited number of audience members in the arena.

If there are any delegations who cannot travel to Rotterdam, their artists will perform from their own country.

All performances in the shows will be brought together in Rotterdam. The entries of the countries that are allowed to travel and the opening and interval acts will still be performed live.

Scenario D: Eurovision Song Contest in lockdown
Should the Netherlands end up in a lockdown-like situation again, there will be a Eurovision Song Contest without an audience and probably without activities in and around Rotterdam.

The performances of the participants will all come from their own country and be brought together from Rotterdam’s Ahoy arena, much like we will see at the Junior Eurovision Song Contest in November.

A definitive choice between scenarios will be made based on the situation in the early months of 2021.

“The ambition to make it happen and to make the best Contest to date is definitely still there”

Host broadcasters NPO, NOS and AVROTRS have 2 years of preparation time. When we talked to Sietse Bakker, Executive Producer of the Contest in 2020 and 2021, back in May, he said: “As a public broadcaster, when you win the Eurovision Song Contest, you want to make the best Eurovision Song Contest ever. You want to do better than the previous year. A lot of work has been done and a lot of knowledge has been gathered. We have learnt a lot over the last year, but I also know that the months ahead will be challenging. We have to think of how we can make the Contest happen no matter what. It brings new challenges, but the ambition to make it happen and to make the best Contest to date, that ambition is definitely still there.”

ITALY 🇮🇹 According to Il Messaggero, RAI will have a special and emergency meeting to check the options for SANREMO FESTIVAL 2021. There are two solutions to the table. Either the dates will remain as it is and the event will take place without an audience or the event will move to date within April. The final decision will also affect how RAI will decide its Eurovision entrant and song as April is outside the EBU deadlines for Eurovision 2021 (unless they get special permission, having in mind that Italy is one of the BIG 5 nations participating in the contest).
FINLAND 🇫🇮 Pekka Juhani "Pave" Maijanen was a Finnish musician, who worked as a singer, songwriter, bass player, keyboard player, drummer, guitarist and producer during his long career. As well as his solo career, Maijanen was a member of The Royals, Rock'n'Roll Band, Pepe & Paradise and he was the keyboard player and producer of Dingo and the Hurriganes. Maijanen's first work as a producer was for the album Nuclear Nightclub by Wigwam. His records didn't sell as they used to and a great misfortune was the last place at the Eurovision Song Contest 1992 with the song "Yamma Yamma". In September 2020 Maijanen revealed he had been diagnosed with amyotrophic lateral sclerosis (ALS) in autumn 2018 and that the disease had progressed to the point that he had to give up playing and singing. He died from his illness on January 16th 2021, aged 70.

EUROVISION 2021 🇳🇱 Although the 2020 Eurovision theme was based on a design we all - somehow - agreed to like, the 2021 version of the 2020 theme seems incoherent and illustrates desperation for presenting something different. Obviously, some try to justify the money they received by presenting this weird and bizarre design. EBU's website, of course, endorsed it and loved it and posted a proud message for it (they cannot do otherwise of course)

ISRAEL 🇮🇱 January 19th at 14:00 KAN will air a special show with Lucy Ayoub presenting three video clips with Eden Alene performing the three final songs. The public voting will kick off and will last for 6 days. The voting will take place through the KAN app available only for Israelis and without any outside influence. The live show for January 25th is cancelled and therefore there will be no jury voting. On the 25/1 show, the videos will be presented again, the authors will be revealed in special vbackstage videos for the creations of the songs. The winner song will be revealed in the end of the show. The change was justified by the pandemic restrictions in the country.
