For 6 years UMK (Uuden Musiikin Kilpailu) has been the national selection procedure for Finland. Inn 2018 in a surprise move and despite calling for songs, YLE internally selected and announced the Finnish sweetheart Saara Aalto to represent the country, a bid which totally failed in the Eurovision 2018 edition.
But YLE will not skip UMK despite the failure. UMK for 2019 is on but it will be only for invited authors and performers.
Producer Anssi Autio says:
The UMK of 2018 showed that through the invitation contest we will be able to invest more in performances and other content. We now continue to develop the concept from this point of view. We are in touch with and have been in contact with record companies, producers, songwriters and artists. We are currently deliberating and discussing different options and possibilities. We are wholeheartedly satisfied. It is good to continue this!
The announcement doesn’t mean that we will have a national final format yet. Maybe another internal selection of artist might take place. All options are open. In 2018 UMK song selection for Saara got 1.4 million viewers and Eurovision 201 semi final and final got 2,5 million viewers. Saara’s three songs were streamed 5 million times in total.
