YES, you got it right, it’s a DIA DE LOS SANTOS INOCENTES joke
WHY we posted it? Because we can!
SPAIN – The Benidorm Fest is just around the corner, and more and more details that TVE advances from the new event. The Greek Fokas Evangelinos, with extensive experience in the Eurovision world and with several victories behind him, will be in charge of designing the 14 stagings of the Alicante festival. Noted for elaborating overloaded scenographies, the Hellenic is an absolute reference in the Eurovision world.
After the criticism received by the staging of “Voy A Quedarme” by Blas Cantó, this year RTVE has opted for the artistic direction of the Greek Fokas Evagelinos. The simplicity that characterized the interpretation of the Murcian in 2021 will give way to a cocktail of structures and devices served by Evagelinos.
The artistic director has among his triumphs the first position of Greece in 2005 with Helena Paparizou and that of Russia in 2008 with Dima Bilan. In 2016 he created the set design for Russian Sergey Lazarev, which was undoubtedly decisive for “You Are The Only One” to reach the third position. He was also in charge of designing the staging of “La Venda” in Tel Aviv.
Fokas has already revealed how seven of the fourteen of the Benidorm Fest stagings will be:
Javiera Mena – “Culpa”:
Javier Mena’s song is one of the favourites of Evangelinos, who assures that his staging will be starring neon and fluorine lights. According to Fokas himself, the scenography will revolve around the phrase “far from good and far from evil”, which so often sounds in the Chilean song:
“The instrumental bridge of the song will undoubtedly be the climax of it. Four dancers will join Javiera in a choreography that promises to be unforgettable. Three elements will be protagonists in this proposal: laser swords, boxing gloves and a giant sunflower”.
Chanel – “SloMo”:
Chanel is one of the participants who is arousing the most passions these days. According to Evangelinos, Chanel will become a true goddess on stage:
“Many may believe that Chanel is the Spanish Foureira, but nothing could be further from the truth. Chanel is much more than that. Her choreography, much more elaborate, will make many viewers sweat. Four shirtless dancers will accompany Chanel in what could be the most sensual staging in the history of Eurovision”.
Gonzalo Hermida – “Who would say it”:
Gonzalo Hermida’s staging will be the soberest of the Benidorm Fest:
“For the set design of -Who would say it- we wanted to show the evolution of a relationship over time. That is why we will show something never done at Eurovision. Gonzalo will be alone on stage sitting on the floor. Along with him, on the screen, there will be scenes of various couples caressing, laughing, dancing … At the end of the song Gonzalo will go to the catwalk where he will meet someone … If you want to know how it ends, you will have to wait for January!”
Rayden – “Calle De La Llorería”:
Rayden presented a week ago the video clip of his proposal for Benidorm Fest, directed by Javier Pageo. With a powerful set design, the music video took the song to heaven. However, Pageo will not be able to direct Rayden’s staging, as Fokas will replace him. Even so, the Greek has assured that the scenography of the Madrid rapper will follow the steps initially designed by Pageo, but with some complements:
“The staging will be very similar to the video clip, although we will add a little more drama. The table will be revolving and during the performance, the diners will revolve around Rayden, who will remain in the centre. As the table turns, all the elements (cutlery, plates …) will be thrown by speed, adding a visual effect never seen before. Some digital tears will fall on the faces of the choristers, who throughout the performance will suffer the consequence of that poisoned dinner. To make a nod to the host city, there will be a paella on the table and in case of winning, in Turin we would add some pasta. We know the importance of these small details that can scratch votes. At the end of the song the LED screen will show a street flooding with tears, with a sign that will read -Crying Place Street-. And yes, the palms and the blows on the table will remain!”
Azúcar Moreno – “Postureo”:
Fokas has claimed to be a great fan of the Extremadura duo, he even remembers the lyrics of “Bandido” and “Debajo Del Olivo”. For this reason, he affirms that he feels great pride in working with the duo:
“It is a dream to be able to collaborate with Azúcar Moreno. His theme represents all the stereotypes of Spain outside its borders. Europe will not understand the lyrics of -Postureo-, but it will. Toñi and Encarna will start in the dark on stage and will approach four vertical screens where black and white photos of four boys will appear. When the chorus arrives, the images will take on colour and behind the screens, four dancers will appear dressed as bullfighters. On the screen, there will be images of boys dancing flamenco taking selfies, San Fermines runners, boys at La Tomatina de Buñol, Las Fallas, and of course at La Feria de Abril. We want to export the Spain brand. In the end, Toñi and Encarna will take a selfie with their four dancers”.
Rigoberta Bandini – “Ay Mamá”:
Paula Ribó, Rigoberta Bandini’s real name, has assured that she is excited to be able to collaborate with Fokas. The Greek has affirmed that the staging will waste femininity:
“We wanted Europe to understand the message. Due to the small number of people who can go on stage, we have considered that the three members of her band do not accompany Paula on stage. Instead, five actresses will interpret various stages of a woman’s life: one of them in the delivery room, another breastfeeding her daughter, another having her first menstruation … At the height of the song, Rigoberta will go up to a stage that is will rise on stage, creating the symbolism of Mary Magdalene. I don’t want to reveal much, but of course, female breasts will appear in the background,” says the set designer.
Tanxugueiras – “Terra”:
Since the publication of “Terra”, Galician Tanxugueiras have become one of the top favourites to win the first prize in Benidorm. For this reason, Fokas Evangelinos has promised a great show, although he claims to want to focus the scenography on the voices of the trio:
“The staging of Tanxugueiras will be very dark and gloomy. We want to simulate a coven. Three bonfires, one in front of each performer, will illuminate the stage, which will not receive light from any spotlight. Three bare-chested dancers will dance around the bonfires. Along with each component of Tanxugueiras there will be a pot of queimada, which they will stir in the stanzas. In the backdrops, you will see sepia-coloured images of shellfish women, pilgrims, the albariño festival, octopus dishes, potato omelette from Betanzos … On the bridge of the song, the camera will focus on the dancers who will prostrate themselves in front of Tanxugueiras. On the chest of each dancer, you can read -Galicia Calidade-. These letters will disappear when Tanxugueiras sprinkle the dancers’ breasts with a ladle of queimada. At that moment the dancers will go into a rage to the rhythm of the drums and will finish the performance in front of the LED screen in the background, on which the Apostle Santiago will appear. A botafumeiro will fall from the sky at the same time that the final outburst of the song sounds. The famous Vigo fireworks will appear as the culmination of a performance that promises to be unique ”.
Fokas Evagelinos will present the rest of the Benidorm Fest stagings tomorrow.
