AZERBAIJAN – Husniye Maharramova, Azerbaijan’s Head of Delegation from 2012 to 2014 and in 2019, was heavily critical of the country’s participation in the competition in Rotterdam:
“‘Mata Hari’ is a very tasteless song that doesn’t fit the trends of modern music. It’s outdated and overused. We should have sent something with a deep meaning related to 2020, a very difficult year for Azerbaijan,” explained Husniye, alluding to the Nagorno-Karabakh armed conflict with Armenia.
However, despite criticism, Husniye Maharramova praised Samira Efendi, the singer chosen to represent the country in Eurovision 2021:
“She is a talented artist whose potential has not been tapped. an undesirable classification”.
