ITALY – In a recent interview, the Eurovision 2022 stage designer, Francesca Montinaro discussed various aspects of the project explaining more about the stage itself.
THE PROJECT
It represents Italy as a monumental square with the sun moving the waters. Sun on a stage means wanting to represent the beauty to come, the dawn of a new beautiful future.
THE BEAUTY OF ITALY
It represents the physical and geographical identity of our country because it is the sea, the Mediterranean, which has made our country that incredible crossroads of cultures and creativity. It represents our attitude to welcome the monumental beauty of the Italian squares [โฆ] When they asked me to talk about Italian beauty in the race brief, I thought it was impossible to choose what it represented. The beauty of our country is complex, it is the result of a stratified, millenary culture.
THE CONCEPT
In the scenography that I designed for Eurovision, I metaphorically brought Italy by building a stage surrounded by water where there is a kinetic sun that reconfigures itself. This time, too, I wanted to create a space that fills, empties and moves: it is the space of sharing, of the show, of music that unites, it is the space of embrace.
THE GREENROOM
To welcome the 40 delegations there will be a fabulous Italian garden that serves as a lounge with lounges hidden among the hedges, all rigorously made of ‘real plants that come from Tuscany’. [โฆ] These European teams will be hosted in these dedicated lounges where they will wait to sing and where the voting will follow. The gardens will all be the same in the logic of putting all the artists on the same level.
BETWEEN BACKGROUND AND DIRECTORS
When we won the international competition at the end of October for which they only gave us 10 days to conceive the concept design project, very little time but the challenge was great, it was tiring but it was worth it. With Cristian Biondani I invented ‘The Barbarian Invasions’ so we are linked by a dream and with Duccio Forzano we have created two Sanremo Festivals and much more. At first, I was a bit worried because, having two opposite personalities, I thought it would be difficult to make them work together. Instead, thanks to the intuition of Claudio Fasulo who is in charge of the whole ESC machine for Rai, it went very well because putting two such different but so capable people together produced powerful sparks of creativity.
