The best result for the Netherlands in 9 years came from Anouk and the song “Birds” in the Eurovision Song Contest 2013, a song which should have won the contest for some of us and for most Eurofans was one of the finest moments of the country in the contest’s history! Former Dutch entrants for The Netherlands such as Gordon and Gerard Joling don’t share this feeling at all!
Gordon said to a local magazine interview – during his comments for the participating songs – that Europe will be going for a cup of coffee during Anouk’s performance, emphasizing that the song isn’t good! The song made him depressed but he surely doesn’t recall how depressed were the Dutch when he failed with his Toppers in 2009.
Gerard Joling dared to compare his 1988 “success” ranked as 9th with Anouk’s result in a radio interview. He was surprised that Anouk made it to the final and feels surprised why Dutch people praise Anouk’s result since Denmark was the one who won and not The Netherlands.
For the history Gordon and the Toppers represented The Netherlands in 2009 failing to qualify to the final as they placed 17th in the semifinal. Gordon also participated in Swiss preselection in 2013 but he also failed to even qualify to the finals with L.A The Voices. Gerard came 9th in the 1988 Eurovision Song Contest when there were only 21 countries participating and voting. Envy will always be a unique passion for some!
