UKRAINE – With the decision upon which Ukrainian city will host the 2017 Eurovision Song Contest still pending and some Eurofans calling EBU to take Eurovision from Ukraine and give it to another city, the tension between Kyiv and Odessa rises. Both Mayors claim there is lack of transparency and propaganda against each other for the job. This turns Eurovision Host City bid into a political saga, unfortunately.
In his personal blog, Kyiv’s Mayor Vitali Klitschko claims that decisions are made “under the table”, there is no transparency. He claims that despite Odessa claiming their bid is undermined, he has the impression that Kyiv is receiving a big propaganda not to take the hosting job. He considers Kyiv as the most ready city to host the event in terms of transportation, airport, accommodation and venue.
On the other side, Odessa’s regional state administrator Mikhail Saakachvili said the decision was ready last week in favour of Odessa but political strings pulled to stop the announcement when everyone knows that the city guarantees all EBU prerequisites for hosting the event. He calls for he government not to give all international events to Kyiv and give Odessa the opportunity to gain international status and recognition proving they are really support the decentralisation in the country. He claims the only thing left is the roof of the venue and that the airport, transportation accommodation and safety are guaranteed if Odessa takes over the job.
Seriously, Ukraine must make a decision not because they are already late, but because the impression the government gives to the international media and fans is very negative!
