PORTUGAL – Radio Antena1 kicks off this Monday s epochal show for Festival da Canção and Eurovision Song Contest – “Festival em 5 minutos” hosted by Nuno Galopim sharing stories from the contest and the national selection related to the sociopolitical and cultural aspect of the contest.
PORTUGAL – In Kyiv we had three male hosts and in Portugal local media claim we will have 4 female hosts. It sounds maybe too much but I can only explain it to the excitement of the Portuguese national broadcaster. Impala News claim that NCIS Los Angeles star Danieal Ruah will join Catarina Furtado, Sílvia Alberto and Filomena Cautela in the hosting job, the official announcement for which will take place tomorrow in a special RTP press conference. It is not clear how the hosting jobs will be attributed or all together will host the three shows or distributed two other jobs (red carpet etc.)
Regarding the potential hosts here are some brief information. Daniella Ruah is a 34 year old actress starring in CBS’s NCIS Los Angeles, starting her career in Portuguese telenovelas. In 2006 she won the Dancing with Stars show in Portugal. Catarina Furtado is 44 years old, TV presented and actress working for RTP the past 14 years. Silvia Alberto is 36 years old she hosted Festival da Canção just like Catarina. She also hosted Disney Club, Portuguese Idol in 2003, 2004, Operação Triunfo in 2007, 2011 and Portugal’s Got Talent show. Filomena was the 2017 spokesperson last year and participates in the comedy chat show “5 Para A Meia Noite” (Five to Midnight). She was also the Green Room hostess at Festival da Canção 2017 which make her maybe perfect for the same job this year (?)
MALTA – There are indications that a Maltese entry is somehow breaching the rules entering the Maltese selection. We speak about Aidan Cassar’s entry “Day Laga” with fans cleaning that he copied Justin Bieber’s songs. Aidan claims he is the composer and lyricist of the song but the backing track sounds like the one of “(Justin Bieber, Major lazer type) Come Alive Prod By Lttb”. Thee backing track was bought from a free-download sampler available for producers to use free in their tracks dated of course prior to the EBU 2017 deadline if you check Beatstars and YouTube. This backing track is used in many songs already and therefore seems to breach originality rules as well. Similar incidents with Anja Nissen and Jamala were judged by the EBU but they were referring to public performances therefore it’s unclear if it really breach the EBU rules. We expect PBS reaction and of course a statement from the artist soon.
Malta Eurovision Regulations state that: “The compositions (lyrics and music) must not have been commercially released before 1st November 2017. In case the composition has been made available to the public, for example, but not limited to, on online video platforms, social networks or (semi-) publicly accessible databanks, the Artist must inform PBS, who shall have authority to evaluate whether the composition is eligible for participation in the Contest.”
