During a virtual panel on Monday, Clarkson said the songwriting competition from producers of โThe Voiceโ and Europeโs long-running annual contest Eurovision, is exactly what viewers need right now.
โPeople just need [something like this]. They need to be lifted up because the world is heavy right now,โ she said. โIt represents so many different pockets of the worldโฆ Itโs going to open up all this conversation. Weโve been divided in this country for quite a bit, but weโre all more similar more than not.โ
She added, โItโs been a very hard couple of years [because of the pandemic] and now itโs getting even more serious in the news. I think feeling like youโre not isolated and that you are a part of something bigger than your everyday worldโฆ sounds cheesy but itโs so important. It makes us happy: Thatโs what this show is gonna do for people. No one is left out. This show is for everyone.โ
Established musical stars competing against unknowns? Youโd think the scales would be tipped in one very obvious direction, but Clarkson insists that is not the case. โThe legacy artists are going to have to work harder,โ Clarkson said. And showrunner and executive producer Audrey Morrissey, agreed: โPeople love an underdog.โ
Morrissey promised that every contestant, famous or not, is getting โan even playing field and being given the same support.โ
There are also systems in place to make sure that each viewerโs vote counts the same, whether itโs from a small territory like Guam or a big state like California. Each region will be worth 12 points, regardless of size, just as it is with Eurovision.
Weโll also see the same level of over-the-top costumes and stage productions as in Eurovision, Morrissey said. Clarkson quickly chimed in, โWe better! Iโm very excited about that part.โ
Much to the dismay of many viewers, no doubt, Clarkson wonโt be singing on this show. โI perform five days a week on television. Iโm actually second-guessing that idea for my talk show,โ she laughed. โThis isnโt about me; this is about these other artists. Iโve had my moment.โ
Sheโs extremely excited to host with Snoop Dogg, whom sheโd previously teamed up with on โThe Voice.โ
โI love Snoop. The thing I loved the most [when he was on โThe Voiceโ] is he really took his time listening to each performance. We were there for hours, but he still took the time to invest, and he really cared. He was into it. Itโs very transparent when theyโre for lack of a better word, bullsโing you or really into it.โ
The two-hour series premiere will air live from the NBCUniversal lot in Universal City, California, on March 21 on NBC.
