MALTA – Welcome to the live report of the Maltese national final “MESC 2016”. The show takes place at the Valletta MCC with 14 acts and hosted by Ben Camille. You can see the show either on http://www.eurovision.tv or on http://www.tvm.com.mt.
The final begins with a video tribute to first Maltese triumph in Junior Eurovision in 2013 in Kyic with Gaia Cauchi followed by hosting the event in 2014 with a spectacular hosting and organisation and of course the most amazing repetition of the triumph in 2015 with Destiny bringing the trophy back again to Malta. Destiny is presented and now performs on stage. Ben Camille is taking over and introduces the jury and explains the procedure of the show.
Deborah C – All Around The World
With the impressive introduction videos once again one the artist who competed last yesterday is now performing first. Deborah seems to be a bit nervous and follows the same stage presentation without changing clothes for the final. The vocals are mediocre but slightly better than yesterday. She seems quite stressed on camera and our impression of the stage presentation remains.
Franklin – Little Love
Little love but big voice from Franklin, a guy who’s usually shaking like a leaf, he is now on stage giving an outstanding vocal performance. The audience gives him an outstanding applause for his amazing and unique voice. I would love to see this voice in Stockholm and I wish he can really surprise us all tonight and despite all odds to make his dream happen. If not though this year, Franklin is for sure one of the next Maltese participants in Eurovision, for sure.
Daniel Testa – Under The Sun
Our former oikotimes.com Smurf now stage. From Junior Eurovision to senior? Well maybe not this year but for sure tonight we will dance his song along with the audience who give him a big welcome applause. You might not love his vocal performance tonight but for sure you love this kid and you see lot of potential. Under the sun the flowers bloom and Daniel is for sure a rising star in Malta.
Brooke – Golden
Back from the first break and Brooke is getting a huge applause in the opening of the song. An amazing tune and amazing vocal performance not to mention the stunning star quality Brooke shines all over the stage. This solo performance could work miracles for Malta in Stockholm if a miracle happens tonight. She can really be the winner if the voting will be totally objective. Brooke is happy with the audience reaction and smiles all the time during her performance. Well done girl!
Raquel – Flashing Lights
One of the best alternatives entries in a Eurovision selection for me. Raquel gives a great vocal performance tonight, totally sentimental, totally souled out and despite the unexplained choreography the song is a tune I wanna have in my iTunes but unfortunately doesn’t appeal me enough to support it tonight.
Christabelle – Kingdom
Runner up last year and huge in popularity in Malta, Christabelle makes the audience go frantic. The audience dances with her “Kingdom” and the sentiment goes high but unfortunately the stage presentation and the outfit are not proper for this competition. I can really listen to the song and love it but I don’t see something that can really convince me tonight that this presentation is suitable for Stockholm. Christabelle though has what we need on a Eurovision stage: star quality and through my interview experience with her I can tell you she is determined one of the following years to represent her country in the Eurovision Song Contest.
Corazon – Falling Glass
OK I don’t know if semi final was too stressful or they did something to the microphones but even Corazón is sounding perfect tonight. If you ignore the dress and the meaningless female dancer on stage the rest of the performance is more than amazing. This entry is a song that I would love to put in my iTunes, it sounds amazing. The singer gives a perfect high note in the bridge of the song and really surprises me. I didn’t expect that at all. Excellent performance. Corazón you are amazing tonight! In the end she fades in her dancer’s arms.
Dominic – Fire Burn
This Swedish pop style song is really growing in me. Vocally Dominic is quite impressive tonight (what the heck have the microphones today) although I would expect a better camera work for this entry: more light and camera movement. Dominic is happy, secure and smiles all the time on stage while his four hotties are accompanying him lovely on stage. This could have been huge in a Euroclub. If this song represented Sweden or Denmark it would have been a Eurovision favourite to win, trust me.
Jessika – The Flame
No it’s not Jessika Rabit, it’s Jessika from Malta with her ambient song opening which turns into something below our expectations. Despite that Jessika remains a magical artist to see on stage with an amazing voice but since this is an artist selection she could have a second chance finding a song suitable for Eurovision but still in this alternative ambient style. The song could have been a UK radio hit for sure and if represented a country like Norway it could also could have been a Eurovision hottie. Jessika no matter what justified tonight her qualification to the final.
Jasmine – Alive
Jasmine gives a decent performance despite some vocal mistakes. She is surely better than yesterday’s semi final and the artistic choreography with the two male dancers seems more sympathetic today (maybe I am used to it). The song and the overall act remains a definite ‘not winner’ tonight but at least she should be proud she gave her best in the show.
Lawrence Gray – You’re Beautiful
The vocal performance is amazing and flawless and if this song represented Malta in the 90s I would be 100% sure it can even win the Eurovision Song Contest. Turning 41 soon and Lawrence is getting applause from the audience. He is supporting his act and song in the best possible way with the four female musicians aside him making it erotic and sentimental at the same time, the stage is full with emotions and the sparkling backdrop graphics making this entry a great act tonight.
Maxine – Young Love
Fresh and sweet 16, Maxine is simply amazing. I would love to see her in Stockholm with this fresh and also vintage at the same time tune. Maxine is perfectly in her vocal performance and she is getting big applause from the audience. Fight for em and I promise to do the same, she sings and for sure I would fight for her. Maxine is the sweetest person in this national selection and it’s our baby! Maxine you are only a miracle away from Stockholm.
Ira Losco – Chameleon
If any of us (or you) had any doubts who’s gonna win tonight, the mystery is solved, the entire MCC gone nuts when the name Ira Losco announced by Ben Camille. Her Chameleon song made it to the final but no matter this song is performed in Stockholm one thing is for sure, Ira will be in Eurovision 2016. The drama with her drummer been absent from the rehearsals made a bit fuzz in the island today but everything is solved as the artist was not aware about it (I am talking about her TWILY performance). Chameleon is performed in style with the white outfit and cape of Ira who’s looking simply outstanding and ready to conquer Europe. Well done!
Kim – Lighthouse
A sweet girl with a simple tune and a performance out of her heart and soul. Kim is not going to win tonight but for sure she wins our love. She is excellent in vocals and she is definitely a true rising star for Malta’s music scene. Kim is a girl that you want to hug when she smiles at you. She is honest, modest and her performance is never exaggerated. Perfect performance and wonderful melodic tune.
that’s all folks. The oikotimes.com poll is closing now prediction Ira Losco to win but let’s see how the juries and the public will vote in the end. Results in the next post.
