STOCKHOLM, SWEDEN – Welcome to the Jury Rehearsal for the Eurovision Song Contest 2016 Second Semi Final. Petra and Måns will guide us through the marathon show in which the juries from the 18 participating countries plus the three participating countries in the Grand Final will cast their votes.
The intro for the Second Semi Final is the same as it was for the First Semi Final and we go on stage now and see our hosts Petra Mede and Māns Zelmerlöw presented to the audience / viewers in the same way as last night. A silver white suit jacket for Mans and and a sparkling grey dress for Petra. The opening turn into a broadway musical act by the two hosts trying to explain with a song, what Eurovision Song Contest is all about. An excellent act, well done SVT!
What an excellent way to open the show tonight, Justs from Latvia performs his powerful entry and the ambient electro pop tune seems to fit perfectly the stage. Perfect vocal performance and the singer is dressed in black with a leather jacket. Definite qualifier for the final. The next performance is from Poland and I am not sure Michał is giving a good performance, something that surprises me. It’s widely known that Polish fans barely support their entry this year as most of them wanted either Margaret or Edyta here in Stockholm. Overall it’s a good performance but this polish version of Conchita can work in the voting. I am not sure how Poland will do tomorrow night, personally I cannot see it to the Final (but that’s just me). Moving to Switzerland now and the smoking dress of Rykka. I don’t understand the point of using this outfit. Nevertheless the vocal performance is very good but the solo performance is not working in my eyes. I cannot see this entry qualifying tomorrow night.
We continue with Israel. I absolutely love not only the superb vocal performance of Hovi but also the simple but artistic stage presentation with the two dancers moving inside a huge hoop. Pyros are also used. This is by far the best ballad of the 2016 Eurovision Song Contest and this country is definitely in the Grand Final. Belarus get the stage and Ivan is presenting an amazing 3D performance with amazing graphics, idea, nudity, wolfs and amazing vocals. Ivan you have to be in the final, this is amazing guys!
Time for a break and and Petra mentions that Ivan from Belarus was about to perform naked with wolves and then Mans appears behind her naked with a wolf and slowly withdraws as Petra reminds us that this would be against the rules.
We move to the stunning Sanja from Serbia. I simply love her. I am biased towards this song because I consider Sanja the most forward, true and unique personality I ever met. She spreads the song message perfectly and her vocal are amazing. Serbia is in the Grand Final no matter what you may think! Moving on to Ireland. Nicky Byrne is not famous for his vocal skills and we all know it but he gives his confident performance and he convinces me that he can do it for the Grand Final. At least he looks sexy and the entire presentation can really attract the average audience! The Former Yugoslav Republic of Macedonia unfortunately has a song that is considered old fashioned and not favoured BUT Kaliopi’s voice is simply superb. She makes you wanna see the monitor and stop whatever you do. She is a performer and you can feel her song no matter the language-varier. In the end Kaliopi didn’t manage to hit the high note unfortunately! Lithuania is next and Donny is really sexy and he enjoys his Eurovision comeback. Great vocal performance and amazing sound. I can definitely see him in the Grand Final!
OH MY GOD! Can Australia destroy all European countries’ plans and get the trophy? Dami Im is giving a stunning vocal performance, although don’t see the point of using this holograms on stage. Love the sparkling wedding gown dress and although a lot dark lighted, Dami Im is singing as she was performing in the Grammys! Stunning! Slovenia is not lucky. Although the performance is good, although nothing special, with the pyros working fine for ManuElla, this entry comes after Australia! Although from Slovenia the tune is too American for me and don’t see how it works. What is great (in general) is that in this Semi Final we have again GREAT SOUND in the monitors and the songs are perfectly heard in our ears.
Our Junior Eurovision hostess in 2015, Poli Genova from Bulgaria. Totally changed since her participation in 2011 Eurovision Song Contest she conquers the stage not only with her lovely and unique voice (she is one of the few artists who can actually sing this year in the contest) but she also with her futuristic stage presentation and dress. “O, day mi lyubovta, Day mi lyubovta” is a totally gimmick that brainwash you! By the end of the night you will ALL sing that! Definitely to the Grand Final (and that’s an order! – joking). The Danish hunks are next. Well they are giving a decent performance, with average vocals but we all know here that this song brought many discussions in Denmark. Soldiers of Love once again after 1987 Eurovision, in the 2016 Eurovision Song Contest. I don’t think they will make it, although I absolutely love the tune! It’s just the live performance that is problematic.
OK now this one will create lots of problems. Armenia, Russia, Australia and France will have to fight hard with this one. Jamaica from Ukraine is special, unique and she sings about history. Although some here wonder why she sings about Tatar deportation (a Russian tribe that collaborated with the Nazi in WWII), the sentiment you get from this electro pop makes you feel goosebumps! The bets consider Ukraine and Russia the ultimate fighters at the moment. Will it be like that on Saturday night? Norway is next: I like the idea of having two songs performed at the same time but the weird thing is that I see Agnete for the first time as she made no public appearances here in Stockholm not even in the red carpet. I would vote for this as the vocal performance is amazing. We all know that Agnete deals with serious psychological problems and I personally like to support her and I think we all should do tomorrow, she is a great artist anyway. Georgian’s Lolitaz are now on stage. After all the songs I heard tonight I think this rock entry which has black and white appearance on TV monitors is not bad at all, but somehow I don’t think it can convince Europe tomorrow night. Vocally Nika is excellent and the tune is definitely a hit for me! Albania is a song that although well structured and well delivered is weak enough to convince European viewers. Its James Bond sound and the golden kitsch dress are not working on camera (at least for me). Vocally she is excellent but I think we miss Eneda here. Its on the edge for me concerning qualification to the final. Finally Belgium is the disco song of the evening. Finland didn’t make it but this one will surely do. Laura is giving a great vocal and stage performance and the dance act is fresh, well structured and although the tune is pure 70s, the outcome is totally 2016! Well done BELGIUM!
Due to technical problem, the EBU decided to allow Georgia perform again!
That’s it folks. After the recap of the songs and there will be live presentation of the Italian, German and British entries. These acts will perform full versions tonight but tomorrow during the live show you will see only one minute of them. Stay tuned for more exciting news by the oikotimes.com team in Stockholm!
