GREECE – On September 2, the Greek legend of music Mikis Theodorakis passed away aged 96. It seems that there was a sort of relationship with the Eurovision Song Contest.
Reading the information on INFEGREECE.GR sourced by the book of George Dampasis (The era of television) we recall that the first approach for the Greek debut in the contest was made to Mikis Theodorakis who couldn’t undertake the project as he was on a tour in Brazil at the time.
The Greek national broadcaster then approached Manos Hatzidakis who thought of a song for either Nana Mouskouri (Luxembourg 1963), Flery Ntantonaki, or even Demy Roussos, who kindly refused due to his music career back then in the USA.
Mikis Theodorakis commented in 2001 on the Greek participation in the English language for the first time, expressing his complaint about the decision of ERT to allow this choice, despite the song was bilingual.
Yesterday we reported to you the message of Vicky Leandros (Luxembourg 1967, 1972) for the death of the music legend. All Greek Eurostars also made similar posts but the interesting posts were from those Eurostars who actually collaborated with Mikis Theodorakis throughout his international career.
