CHINA – In front of an audience of about 50 million viewers, the 2018 Eurovision Song Contest winner Netta Barzilai performed moments ago in the Zhejiang Satellite TV Autumn Festival 2019.
Netta says: I just can’t believe how fortunate I am. I got a CRAZY opportunity to sing my song in front of 500 million people that know nothing about me — live on Chinese television. It felt so surreal. In China, they do not use our social media like FB or IG, and all the streaming platforms are different. It’s like starting from scratch and there’s nothing more beautiful and painful than that. I want to say thanks to Naomi Wang Ju who welcomed me so well and sang so beautifully with me.
Netta was not alone on stage. She performed the song NANA BANANA along with China’s superstar Naomi Wang Ju.
Dubbed China’s Beyoncé, pop star Naomi Wang Ju boasts physical traits that are unusual for female pop stardom in Asia. Her tanned, freckled skin and stout legs are worlds apart from the cookie-cutter look of China pop princesses, with their slim, shapely thighs and porcelain white skin.
Last year, China’s state-run GLOBAL TIMES newspaper called her “a cultural phenomenon worthy of attention”.
China’s LGBT community has also sung her praises; Lesdo, a WeChat account for lesbians, has actively shown their support for her, while Danlan, a sexual minority group, wrote: “Everything Wang Ju has been through, we gays have been through.”
Not sure if Netta is turning into pure K-pop anytime soon as she has to make a short tour in Poland next January.
