Dutch newspaper publishes that NOS has made claims that the 2013 winning entry “Only teardrops” is a copy of K-otic’s 2002 song “I surrender”. K-otic is a Dutch band. However, a member of K-otic says that while there are some similarities it can hardly be called plagiarism.
Dutch producer and talent show judge Eric van Tijn says, “Eurovision songs should be new compositions. The [flute] melody is clearly one-on-one, that is undeniable. Still, I think it a storm in a glass of water, because it is only similar in the intro”. Sietse Bakker from the EBU says, “There is a difference between plagiarism and songs that sound similar. Such claims are made every year. From my experience, the conclusion always is that the songs sound alike, but it’s not plagiarism”.
