Journalist and presenter Pat Kenny is to leave RTÉ to begin a new contract with Newstalk. Mr Kenny’s 41-year career with the national broadcaster is to come to an end. He is well known as the presenter of various news and current affairs programmes on RTÉ, including Today with Pat Kenny, The Late Late Show, Kenny Live, Frontline and Today Tonight.
He co-presented of the Eurovision Song contest in 1988.
RTÉ said Mr Kenny had “courted controversy” over the past few years as a result of his increasing salary, at a time when the broadcaster was scaling back its deficit and salary scales. His salary was €630,000 in 2011, €729,604 in 2009 and €950,976 in 2008, according to RTÉ.
Mr Kenny’s departure follows contract negotiations over the past few months. Newstalk said the presenter would be on air from 2 September on a new daily current affairs show.
