PORTUGAL – Festival da Canço will once again be divided into two semi-finals, with five songs from each semi-final qualifying. The Grand Final will feature ten competing entries, with the winner determined by a 50/50 televoting and jury vote.
The twenty songs competing to represent Portugal at the Eurovision Song Contest 2022 will be revealed in just over a week. RTP has so far revealed the composers competing in the Festival da Canço; the composers may sing their entries themselves or choose another artist to do so.
The first semi-final of Festival da Canço 2022, the Portuguese selection for the Eurovision Song Contest 2022, will be hosted by Sónia Araújo and Jorge Gabriel, according to RTP.
The announcement was made this morning on Praça da Alegria, confirming the repetition of the duo from last year’s Festival da Canço’s first semi-final.
Sónia Araújo will host the Festival da Canço for the seventh time, having led the 2001 edition alongside Cristina Möhler and having been in charge of one of the contest’s semi-finals since 2007, sharing the presentation with José Carlos Malato, Tânia Ribas de Oliveira, and Jorge Gabriel.
Sónia was chosen by RTP to represent Portugal in the Eurovision Dance Contest in 2007, where she finished sixth with 74 points, the best ranking ever for Portugal in the event.
The Festival da Canço will be hosted for the ninth time by Jorge Gabriel. Previously, he hosted the finals of the Festival da Canço in 2006 and 2007, as well as one of the semi-finals from 2017 to 2021.
Jorge Gabriel also hosted the Portuguese selection for the Junior Eurovision Contest in 2006, 2007, and 2017, the latter with Sónia Araújo, after commentating on the Eurovision Contest 2007 in Helsinki for RTP.
