SPAIN – The Spanish Socialist Party, the main opposition party currently in Spain, has requested to the CultureCommission that Spain’s Eurovision representative sing only in a National language.
The request is aimed at the 2018 edition, that will take place in Lisbon and it aims to see one of the official languages of Spain to be used at the contest. Spanish is not the only official language of Spain and the chosen artist could, according to PSOE, choose between Castilian Spanish, Basque, Galician and Catalan.
This would mean that English, which was the language used in the past two editions, would no longer be employed at Eurovision. PSOE have also expressed a need for transparency in how TVE choose their representative for Eurovision, feeling that given events in the 2017 National Final, there might be a level of negativity aimed at the “Spain” brand.
It also needs to be said that PSOE, along with two other Spanish political parties (Ciudadanos and Podemos) expressed their disapproval at what they saw as a questionable selection process for the 2017 edition and which, in turn, resulted in a change of personnel at the very top of TVE.
