LISBON, PORTUGAL – Portuguese broadcaster, RTP, will not air the 2016 Eurovision Song Contest, according to local media. It will be the first time since the country first took part in the contest, in 1964, that it will not be aired by the national broadcaster. Instead, fans in Portugal will have to follow the webcast on the official Eurovision Song Contest Website. Portugal will not take part in this year’s Eurovision Song Contest but has signalled a return in 2017.

Following a string of bad results, Portugal has taken a year out from the contest. It last took part in the grand final in 2010, failing to qualify over the past five years. The country holds the record for the most appearances’ at Eurovision (48) without a win, having never made it into the top five, be it in the semis or final. Its best placing remains 6th place in 1996.
