SWEDEN – The voting via the Melodifestivalens app strikes new records every year. Now the voting system will change. New for this year is that all app users are divided into seven different viewer groups based on age. All telephone votes end up in an eighth group of viewers. At the same time, the possibility of voting via SMS disappears. The TV heart will show the different viewer groups’ commitment and which viewer group is extra engaged in real time. All different age groups have equal power.
The purpose of the change is that many people find that only children are controlling the result. But after a deep dive in voting numbers from previous years, it is possible to see another pattern.
– It has become clear that all the songs that have received the most votes have been loved by all viewers regardless of age. But we naturally want everyone to feel that their voices are counted and therefore we have listened to the viewers and make this change, says Melodifestivalens project manager Anette Helenius.
Last year, over 6 million votes came in via the Melodifestivalens app. Commitment has increased by almost 2000% since the app was launched. Voting in the Melodifestivalen is something that almost every fifth viewer does.
“This is a world-unique high level of commitment to a TV program and something we are very proud of,” says Anette Helenius.
Even the TV heart will get a new look. During the TV broadcast, the heart will bounce based on the amount of voices coming in right now. The TV heart will not only pulsate but also change color. The color corresponds to the viewing group that is most involved right now.
– We want everyone’s voices to be heard. This is the whole of Sweden’s competition, no matter how old you are, says Anette Helenius.
The possibility of SMS voting disappears, but the telephone vote remains. And it will continue to donate money to Radiohjälpen via telephone. All phone numbers can also be dialed directly from the app.
The procedure for heart rate voting in the app does not change. But the user needs to specify age at login.
In the final, an international jury also votes which consists of the same number of jury groups as viewing groups (8). The distribution between the viewers and the international jury is 50/50.
Here’s how the viewer groups look like:
Green: 3-9 years
Turquoise: 10-15 years
Blue: 16-29 years
Purple: 30-44 years
Pink: 45-59 years
Red: 60-74 years
Phone (no color)
Each viewer group shares the same number of points (43). Distributed on scale 12, 10, 8, 6, 4, 2, 1.
