SWEDEN – Today Swedish national broadcaster revealed the 28 participants for the 2020 Melodifestivalen edition. Lots of comebacks are already appearing in the semi-finals line up. Melodifestivalen is an annual music competition organised by Swedish public broadcasters Sveriges Television (SVT) and Sveriges Radio (SR). It has chosen the country’s representative for the Eurovision Song Contest since 1959. It is Sweden’s most popular television shows, and it has been estimated that more than 4 million Swedes watch the show annually.
Almost every Swedish entry for Eurovision has been selected through Melodifestivalen. Only Sweden’s first entry in 1958 was not selected through Melodifestivalen, having been selected internally by the Swedish broadcaster at the time, Swedish Radio Service.
This year the Melodifestivalen tour will start from Linköping on 1st of February. The other semifinals will take place in Gothenburg, Luleå and Malmö. The ANDRA CHANSEN round will be hosted by Eskilstuna and the final will take place in Stockholm on March 7.
The hosts for Melodifestivalen 2020 are Lina Hedlund, David Sundin and Linnea Henriksson. Lina has previously taken part in Melodifestivalen six times, both as a solo artist and as part of the band Alcazar. In 2019 she competed with the song “Victorious” and finished 11th in the final. 2,545 songs were entered to the 2020 Melodifestivalen, an increase by 250 from the year before. 12 of the 28 songs will be sung in Swedish.
