ZÜRICH, SWITZERLAND – On January 31st we will know which of the six acts will get the ticket to Vienna. The team of oikotimes.com is amazed this year with all six finalists as they all have something great to present, a rare case in a Swiss selection. Therefore we decided to interview all of them. Today we present you the interview with Licia Chery who will perform the song “Fly” in the national final.
Can you tell us a bit more about your background ?
First, let me thank you for taking the time to interview me. Well, it all started with piano lessons when I was 8. Gradually I started writing songs (very bad ones at the beginning – laughing) then I eventually got better. When I was 17 I composed my first album and recorded it as a work for school. When I was 21, I left Switzerland to try to make it in the USA. I performed in New-York then in Canada, and I won a casting in Brooklyn and was able to sing my own songs in Brooklyn for the first time. At 24, I raised money on a website to produce my debut album and for the first time, my songs were on the radio. Now, at 29, I recorded my next album in Canada and it’s scheduled for Spring 2015. In the meanwhile, I’m trying to represent Switzerland at the Eurovision Song Contest!
How did you end up in the Swiss national selection show ?
The national radio/television asked me to be part of it so I gave it a try…
What’s the story behind your song ?
Letting sadness see what happiness can do!!! It’s really about being aware that life is no fairy tale but it’s really easier to go on with a positive attitude and knowing how to put your troubles aside for a while… 3 minutes on the case of my song hahaha.
With no less than four national languages, how do you explain that Swiss entries are performed in English ?
I can’t speak for the other contestant, but for me, it’s really about the music that inspired me and that I love. I grew up listening to Soul, Blues and Michael Jackson so it was very natural for me to start writing in English, and that’s what goes with the kind of music I write
What would you be ready to do to win the trophy in Vienna ?
I’d be ready to work day and night non-stop, to prove to all the viewers that they have to chose me!!!!
For foreigners, Switzerland is the country of chocolate, banks, clocks and of course the purple Milka cow. What vision of Switzerland would you like Eurovision viewers to have this year ?
You said it earlier: 4 national languages. But also 26 cantons and still we manage to be a united nation! To me Switzerland is the country of the acceptance of the other. It is a very small country with so many different nationalities. It’s beautiful. I would say that Switzerland is the perfect representation of building bridges
Honestly, have you ever been ashamed of a Swiss Eurovision entry ?
I’m never ashamed of anybody trying to perform on stage. I know too well how hard it is and how committed you have to be to do so. What some people in the audience think of your performance is another story but I can only be proud of all those who tried to represent Switzerland.
