ICELAND / PRESS RELEASE – “Our song, Með Hækkandi Sól, is an anthem for those who are silenced, and we dedicate it to everyone who is being oppressed,” says Sigga from the band Systur.
Iceland’s Eurovision entry is proving itself to be the dark horse of the competition. On Tuesday Systur’s melodic, dreamy song about hope in the darkness won the hearts of voters and got them through to the Eurovision finals. After a magnetic performance, the group made a heart with their hands to show their support for the victims of the war in Ukraine.
“We have to express our support to those who are under attack. The heart is a symbol of hope,” says Sigga.
Systur believe strongly in the healing power of music and focuses their activism on transgender children’s rights. “It is really important for us to stand with them and support their human rights,” says Elín, who is gender fluid. “80% of trans-children consider suicide, 40% of them try.” Says Sigga, who is the mother of a trans child and wants to spread the message that “by loving your child unconditionally you lower that risk considerably.”
The song will be performed in Icelandic, but the live performance video has English subtitles.
Systur will perform in The Eurovision Song Contest 2022 Grand Final tomorrow night, Saturday the 14th of May and will be number 18 on stage.
