UKRAINE – The official statement of UA:PBC over the sanctions by EBU: The National Public Television and Radio Company of Ukraine, as the organizer of the Eurovision Song Contest 2017, made every effort to ensure that the international song contest in Kyiv was successful. The quality of the organization Eurovision 2017 was highly appreciated not only by the delegations of the participating countries and the audience of the show, but also by the European Broadcasting Union, about which it has informed UA:PBC in it’s official letter.
Despite this, the European Broadcasting Union has announced that it is considering the possibility of sanctions against UA:PBC for the fact that the host broadcaster was unable to ensure the participation of the singer from the Russian Federation Yulia Samoilova in the contest.
The decision to ban the entry into the territory of Ukraine of Yulia Samoilova for a period of three years was made by the Security Service of Ukraine in connection with the proven fact of the illegal entry of the singer into the territory of the occupied Crimea.
In this regard, the National Public Television and Radio Company of Ukraine reports that it steadfastly adheres to the legislation of Ukraine, fulfils the decisions of the authorities and does not see possible to violate the laws of the state under any condition. Eurovision as well as any other international contest can not be an exception and an excuse for violating the laws of the countries participating in it.
In addition, the National Public Television and Radio Company of Ukraine notes that the public broadcaster is not an authority that controls the borders or which affects the legislation of Ukraine. The issue of border crossing rules and relevant sanctions for their non-compliance does not lie in the responsibility of the National Public Television and Radio Company of Ukraine.
Given the above, the sanctions against the National Public Television and Radio Company of Ukraine are unreasonable. UA:PBC will contest such sanctions in accordance with the rules in force in the European Broadcasting Union and the Statutes of the EBU.
