SEMIFINAL 1 SONGS
COLLIDING WITH YOU
Strong chorus and good voice, mildly helped by the overtones from backing base. Sounding like Nelly Furtado, this song is a strong pop/RnB number which could find itself at home within a chart show however are such songs so noticeable at Eurovision? (7/10)
LAST NIGHT
A high vocal performance in this pop/dance song which is very reminiscent of the early 1990s, especially of Heather Small from M People. A very monotonous chorus, it makes full use of the singer’s vocal talents however again, I would find it difficult for anyone to remember this song on Eurovision night. (6/10)
SYTYTA MUT VAAN
A soft rock song, this is very reminiscent of Japanese manga tunes, the lyrics are very hyperextended in order to match the loud high notes and it does appear that the performance is somewhat hurried. Saying this, it would be an acceptable song but it just doesn’t sound like Eurovision. (6/10)
SATURDAY NIGHT FOREVER
A feel good rock song, this would be more at home on the independent music scene. A good performance although the lyrics are somewhat repetitive. Seeing this band, reminds me of a boyband with guitars. (7/10)
WE SHOULD BE THROUGH
A slow ballad, the only one that will be performed on the night. It has a good sound to it and a strong message, the piano melody makes it a soothing number, in my opinion the best song of the night but Eurovision has not been known lately for its soothing music. This may be it’s only drawback. (8/10)
ILMALAIVALLA
A folk song to end the night and something very traditional at Eurovision, if only more countries entered folk tunes. Our performers could do with a wardrobe change, so I hope that they choose something more appealing for the night. It has a nice melody and is an enjoyable number. (7/10)
SEMIFINAL 2 SONGS
PAPERILYHTY
A nice folk song, with a good melody and enjoyable lyrics. The change in tempo, makes it a good song in which to introduce onstage performers, so there is potential to make this song a strong visual contender. (7/10)
LOST IN THE WOODS
A rock song, this song has a heavy base and loud accoustics which constantly drown out the lyrics. This will strongly supported by both neutrals and marginal Eurovision fans however, for me, it has two concerns, it lacks a wide appeal and we have already had Lordi to surprise us with rock music. (6/10)
HE’S NOT MY MAN
A country song sang in English which adds weight to its defined genre. Good accoustics, if somewhat repetitive. Eurovision has never really taken to this kind of music even if Dolly Parton, Johnny Cash and Willie Nelson have provided us with some of the most iconic songs of all time. (7/10)
FLAGS
A soft rock song, it is very reminiscent of late 1990s performers. A good composition, it may lack a defining punch to the performance but it’s well performed and has a nice sound, will it be noticeable? (7/10)
MARRY ME
A pop tune which was originally performed with our lead singer wearing a wedding dress. If anything, this song would be the reason not to marry. A good, solid performance with catchy lyrics and a very danceable composition. A little too repetivive would be the main criticism. (6/10)
DANCING ALL AROUND THE UNIVERSE
We end this one with another soft rock song, since 2006 there appears to be a need to keep the genre alive. Nothing noticeable with this one, it’s well performed, good accoustics but maybe a little too much base where not needed. (6/10)
