MINSK, BELARUS – A petition is on in Belarus for a rather awkward reason… Conchita Wurst, the 2014 Austrian representative. Some Belarusian citizens (we ignore the number yet) have filed the petition with the Ministry of Information. In their opinion, BRTC, the state broadcaster, shouldn’t broadcast the transvestite’s performance in Copenhagen as this would promote an “unacceptable lifestyle”.
In the petition’s text one can read such sentences as:
The popular international competition will see our children filled with European liberals become a hotbed of sodomy! Belarus, one of the few countries in Europe that was able to maintain normal and healthy family values based on love and mutual support between men and women!
Unfortunately for them, EBU has always underlined that the broadcast of the entire contest is one of the main conditions to take part to it (remember Lebanon 2005 and what happened when they refused to broadcast of the Israeli entry). So BRTC would have to choose between obeying the petition or send an entry to this year’s Eurovision Song Contest.
Let’s remind these narrow minded people that Eurovision is a show and nothing but a show and that they should focus on other values that have been lacking in the Belarusian landscape for a few years now, democracy and tolerance. These are the values European countries have in common (with some exception obviously). And to be honest, for most European countries, dictatorship and censorship are much more unacceptable than transvestites…
