This text came to me as a personal need to – somehow – send a message to Cyprus national broadcaster regarding the Eurovision Song Contest based on several facts: First that Cyprus is a wonderful country to host a Eurovision edition. Second because Cyprus is not playing the political game of jury voting exchange or using the diaspora. Third because the country has a great history in Eurovision despite poor scoreboard results leaving the best impressions every year (when it comes to singing team and delegation). Fourth because Cyprus has indeed great resource in great voices.
So my question today is: will Cyprus ever participate claiming the trophy?. It’s no secret that the country is not throwing money to support their participation. Even if they want to now, they can’t because of the economic criris plundering the island of Aphrodite. So what’s left? To find a great song, with a smart concept, a great voice and a spectacular stage presentation.
Cyprus proved to the Eurofan community that they can host an international event like Eurovision, hosting one of the best Junior Eurovision editions in 2008. The Eurovision team in CyBC is one of the most dedicated Eurovision teams I personally know in Europe. They have the potentials to go further than just participating in the contest and further than just been in Eurovision to give 12 points to Greece in the final.
I strongly urge Cyprus national broadcaster to remain in the contest and for 2014 to find an entry which will be amongst the favourites to win. South Europe should clearly claim the contest and stop just participating just to promote their countries name. If you ask the Eurofans, most of them would simply love the idea of having Eurovision in countries like Spain, Portugal, Malta or Cyprus. It’s time to make it happen. But in order for the Eurofan community to stand by them and support them as never before countries like Cyprus should work thoroughly in that direction.
Cyprus has the resources to host an excellent Eurovision Song Contest. They have great voices to represent them and they proved to all of us that in collaboration with the fans and international authors they can make it! I sincerely hope that Cyprus will remain in 2014 Eurovision edition despite the crisis and will finally participate with a strong entry this time. Otherwise I will really wonder: why do they even bother to send a song anymore?
what do you think of my thoughts about Cyprus?
